Frank Calloway
Born c. 1915, Montgomery, Alabama
Died 2014, Tuscaloosa, Alabama
Frank Calloway spent much of his life as a laborer, working mostly on farms, logging and building roads. He claims to have begun drawing as a small child, although, he explains that his working as a laborer prevented him from making art during that time. He was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1952 and was committed to Bryce Hospital, a mental health facility in Tuscaloosa. He remained in an institution for the rest of his life, where he spent many hours making art. Calloway’s imagery is drawn from his memories and life experiences. His drawings on butcher paper using crayon, pen, and marker are often from 8 feet to over 60 feet long depicting one activity after another. When explaining his work he said, “I do my best.”
