BORN Texas Aug 2, 1949
DIED Colorado December 21, 2021
Born in Texas in 1949 and raised in Georgia, Dorethey is one of four daughters born to a Dutch immigrant and a Tennessee mountain man. She spent much of her adult life in Georgia among the beautiful, rolling foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Always creative, Dorethey began making art as a child; she spent hours making doll clothes and drawing scenes from her vivid imagination. Besides her visual art, Dorethey wrote short stories and poetry throughout her life; she often included an original poem on the reverse side of her paintings.
It was not until she developed arthritis that Dorethey discovered she could paint. As her ability to grasp a needle worsened, she transitioned from embroidery and cross-stitch to another outlet for her tremendous creative energy – painting with acrylic paint on canvas. Her works featured wide custom-made frames, painted to make them an integral part of her art. A reoccurring theme in her work features angels placed intricately among every-day scenes, and her settings of rolling foothills are reminiscent of the scenery near her Georgia home.
Dorethey passed away December 21, 2021 in Colorado.
